Hafenwerkstatt – A space for creativity and projects using recycled terrazzo
Recycled terrazzo opens up new possibilities for incorporating materials that define a building’s identity from existing structures into contemporary interiors.
One example of this is the Hafenwerkstatt in Tönning, a conversion of a former abattoir. There, the characteristic red clinker bricks from the existing building were dismantled, processed into aggregate and turned into terrazzo. The surface blends seamlessly with hemp blocks, clay plasters, hand-cast elements and wrought metalwork.
The new materiality allows the space to be experienced as an organically evolved structure: irregularities, subtle colour variations and unique inclusions create a design depth that is virtually impossible to achieve with industrially manufactured surfaces. For interior design, this approach offers the opportunity to use existing materials as an identity-defining component of new spatial concepts, thereby creating added value both in terms of design and environmental sustainability.
