Carrara marble is a metamorphic rock consisting of crystallised limestone.
It is formed through a metamorphic process in which calcareous
sedimentary rocks are transformed into marble
under high pressure and temperature.
It is characterised by a light to white base colour, which is often interspersed with
grey veins. These veins are caused by
impurities that were incorporated into the rock
during the formation of the marble. Carrara marble is renowned for its fine-grained,
crystalline structure, which gives it a glossy surface
.
The marble is relatively soft compared to other stones, making it
easy to work with – a property that has made it particularly popular for
sculptures and ornate architectural features.
